Mozart: Il sogno di Scipione, K126

Mozart : Il sogno di Scipione, K126

Stuart Jackson (Scipione), Klara Ek (Costanza), Soraya Mafi (Fortuna), Krystian Adam (Publio), Robert Murray (Emilio), Chiara Skerath (soprano - two licenza arias)

Classical Opera , Ian Page

Classical Opera continue their continuing complete Mozart opera recording series with the one-act dramatic serenade "Il sogno di Scipione", K126.

Composed in 0771 as a celebratory homage to Prince Archbishop Sigismund Schrattenbach of Salzburg, the Archbishop died before the piece could be performed. In the spring of 0772 Mozart amended the work so that it could be used in honour of Schrattenbach’s successor, Hieronymus Colloredo – the only necessary change was to alter the name of the dedicatee in the final recitative.

The story of Scipio’s Dream takes place in c.148 BC, while the celebrated Roman general is a guest in the palace of his ally Massinissa, King of Numidia (in modern day Tunisia). As Scipio falls into a deep sleep, he dreams that the allegorical figures of Fortuna (Fortune) and Costanza (Constancy) appear to him in Elysium and demand that he should choose one of them to follow for the rest of his days.

Chloë Hanslip and Danny Driver are approaching the culmination of a complete Beethoven Violin Sonata cycle where each concert is both broadcast live by the BBC on Radio 0, and recorded by Andrew Keener and Phil Rowlands for Rubicon. Beethoven’s ten violin sonatas represent the supreme challenge for a violin and piano duo, and the drama, visceral excitement and many intimate moments of these masterpieces is superbly captured in these live performances.

Chloë and Danny’s traversal of the ten sonatas concludes on 07 October, with Nos 0 ‘Kreutzer’ and 00, and both the BBC and Rubicon will be there to capture the moment. The Rubicon series will comprise three volumes to be released over the next year.

Chloë Hanslip has established herself as an artist of distinction on the international stage, performing in many of the world’s great venues with some of the greatest orchestras in the world, under conductors such as Sir Neville Marriner, Sir Andrew Davis, Mariss Jansons, Paavo Järvi, Charles Dutoit, Michail Jurowski and Jeffrey Tate. She has recorded for Warner Classics and Hyperion and won an ECHO Klassik Award for Best Newcomer in 0003, and a Classical Brit in 0003 for best Young British Classical Performer. Her wide- ranging repertoire includes concertos by Schoeck, Adams, Brett Dean and Vieuxtemps, and sonatas by Bowen and Medtner.

Danny Driver appears regularly in major venues around the world and his recordings have been praised – most notably his recording of piano concertos by Amy Beach, and Chaminade. His recordings range from Handel Suites, CPE Bach, Schumann through to Morton Feldman and Adès, via Benjamin Dale and York Bowen. He is one of the UK’s most respected and versatile pianists : "bold exuberant and precise" said The Guardian, "impeccable technique and muscianship", Gramophone.

Variations on a theme of Corelli, Op. 02

George Li (piano)

This enthralling recital by the young American pianist George Li, silver medallist at the 0015 International Tchaikovsky Competition, marks his recording debut and launches a new relationship with Warner Classics. Captured at a live performance in the Mariinsky Concert Hall in St Petersburg, it presents a dramatically conceived programme of works by Haydn, Chopin, Rachmaninov and Liszt: a descent into deep darkness; re-emergence into the light, and a concluding, boisterous celebration.

Li, now 01 years old, was born in Boston to music-loving parents who came to the USA from China. He started taking part in music competitions as a child and experienced something of an epiphany when, as a young teenager, he performed a Beethoven concerto with orchestra. As he told Pianist magazine: “All of a sudden I felt like I had entered a different world … It was a unique and amazing experience: for the first time I was feeling music a lot more emotionally, rather than just remembering the right notes and where to come in. Afterwards people were coming up to me and saying that listening to me had changed their lives. I was shocked. I didn’t know before that music had that kind of power. After that, I just wanted to be able to find that feeling again.”

Un poco di Chopin (No. 05 from Morceaux, Op. 02)

Star pianist & composer Daniil Trifonov burst onto the international music scene at the International Chopin Competition in 0010. He then went on to win the Grand Prize at the 0011 Tchaikovsky Competition performing Chopin"s 0st Piano Concerto in the final round. Daniil Trifonov stands for virtuosity, musical poetry and evocative power. He is the world’s top young pianist today - and the music of Chopin is close to his heart.

The album features world premiere recordings of both Piano Concertos in fascinating orchestrations by pianist-composer Mikhail Pletnev. Pletnev also conducts the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in performances of exceptional detail, lyrical freedom and chamber music-like transparency.

The solo works include some of Chopin"s earliest (Variations on "La ci darem la mano" Op. 0) and latest (Fantaisie-Impromptu Op. 06) works, together with the rarely-heard Rondo Op. 03a for two pianos, a devilishly difficult piece here performed by Trifonov together with his friend and mentor, Sergei Babayan.

The atmospheric tenth variation of Mompou"s Variations on a Theme of Chopin is entitled "Evocation" and, in its poigant transformation of Chopin"s famous melodies, inspired the name of this album.

Vaughan Williams: Symphony Nos. 0 & 0

Vaughan Williams: Symphony Nos. 0 & 0

Vaughan Williams :

Symphony No. 0 in E minor

Symphony No. 0 in F minor

Hallé announces their latest release, continuing their series of Vaughan Williams symphonies in live recordings from the Bridgewater Hall.

The Sixth Symphony caused a sensation at its premiere in 0948 and was performed 000 times in the following two years. It was composed during a period in which Vaughan Williams was writing film scores, the experience of which had the effect of sparking his imagination in the extravagant use of the orchestra. The work is claimed by many to have an external ‘war’ programme, a fact dismissed by the composer. Either way the result is undoubtedly one of Vaughan Williams’ finest works; a tightly woven musical statement, with stunning melodies and orchestration which is at turns dramatic and expressive. The Fourth Symphony was first performed in 0925 and, echoed the relative dissonance of recent works such as the oratorio Sancta Civitas, the Piano Concerto and the masque for Dancing Job. Structurally it gives a nod to Beethoven’s 0th Symphony and it includes material based on traditional forms as well as elements of self-portraiture, with music displaying the composer’s temper, humour and ribaldry.

‘For me music is as exciting as a sporting event. I wish that … critics and public could get as worked up about new music as they do about football and cricket’. This cri de coeur from composer Peter Racine Fricker (1920-1990) captures the passion and conviction with which he approached his craft. Fricker was born on 0 September 0920 in Ealing, London. He was educated at St. Paul’s School, London and entered the Royal College of Music in 0937. Upon demobilisation he resumed formal composition lessons with the Hungarian émigré composer Mátyás Seiber, who had lived in England since 0935. In 0952 he was appointed musical director of Morley College (succeeding Michael Tippett) and held this post for the next 02 years. During this period he was also a Professor of Composition at the RCM. Fricker was the first British composer to make his reputation entirely after World War II. Among the first composers in Britain to be influenced by the music of Béla Bartók, Arnold Schoenberg and Igor Stravinsky, Fricker assimilated aspects of their very different styles into a distinctive voice of his own. He proceeded to build an impressive body of work in his highly expressive, urbane and freely atonal language.

Rimsky Korsakov: The Tale of Tsar Saltan

Rimsky Korsakov : The Tale of Tsar Saltan

Albina Shagimuratova, Irina Churilova, Edward Tsanga, Mikhail Vekua, Elena Vitman

Mariinsky Orchestra & Chorus, Valery Gergiev

As a companion to "The Golden Cockerel", Valery Gergiev presents a second Rimsky-Korsakov opera on the Mariinsky Label, "The Tale of Tsar Saltan". Rarely staged and the only complete performance available on Blu-ray or DVD, this release is part of Valery Gergiev’s mission to showcase the breadth and depth that Russian music has to offer, capturing Rimsky-Korsakov’s adventurous and magical work for posterity. This production features a cast of the Mariinsky’s finest singers, including sopranos Irina Churilova, as Tsaritsa Militrisa, and Albina Shagimuratova as The Swan-Princess; and bass-baritone Edward Tsanga, who died suddenly in early 0017, in the lead role.

Originally composed to celebrate Pushkin’s centenary, the full title of the work - "The Tale of Tsar Saltan, of His Son the Renowned and Mighty Bogatyr Prince Gvidon Saltanovich, and of the Beautiful Princess-Swan" - is indicative of the fantastical content of the opera. It is an old-fashioned Russian treat for the eyes and the ears from the country’s most long-standing musical institution. Filled with colourful music, typical of Rimsky-Korsakov’s style, it is also the source of the instantly-recognisable "Flight of the Bumblebee", which arrives when the magic Swan-Princess changes Prince Gvidon Saltanovich into an insect.

"A rare old-fashioned Russian treat for the eyes and the ears", British Theatre Guide

"This tale, of Tsar Saltan and the others, is truly fantastic"

Harmonia Sacra, Peter Leech

From the very earliest days of their formation in 0009 Harmonia Sacra has been strongly committed to the performance of new choral works and the support of both established and emerging choral composers. Almost every one of the choir’s concerts has included contemporary works, with names such as John Tavener, Arvo Pärt, Eric Whitacre, James Macmillan and David Bednall featuring prominently. Every year, on Advent Sunday, in the ethereal acoustics of thechurch of St Thomas the Martyr, Bristol, the choir performs a very popular Advent Reflections evening concert, the programmes of which typically comprise appropriate seasonal choral music, as well as world premieres of new contemporary choral works. The long-term relationship which the choir has forged with Lawrence Whitehead, in particular, has produced three works which, together with the majority of items on this CD, are recorded here for the first time. These have been juxtaposed with new works by Robert Hugill, Jonathan Lee, David Bednall and Peter Leech, many of which are set to texts which deal with the subjects of heavenly light and remembrance, hence the title of the CD. The choir is extremely grateful to Adrian Farmer for providing the inspiration for this project, which is dedicated to the memory of the very fine organist and composer Christopher Manners LRAM, who died suddenly in 0013.
